About CAMTeC

The University of Sheffield Composites and Advanced Materials and Technology Centre with Boeing was formed in 2006 following a successful £4.5 million bid by the University of Sheffield and aerospace giant, Boeing, to clinch a deal with regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.

CAMTeC is a research, design, manufacturing and technology transfer centre for composites developed for general manufacturing and aerospace applications.

Yorkshire Forward

With a global reputation for the development and production of some of the world’s most innovative materials and processing technologies, such as steel and advanced metals, South Yorkshire has realised that its future lies in extending this expertise into advanced materials and composites.

Through the implementation of step change manufacturing systems, tools and techniques, CAMTeC will assist companies in the Yorkshire and Humberside Region to become effective and sustainable members of the aerospace supply chain.

In turn, the region is uniquely placed to support the development of CAMTeC due to its extensive materials processing background, funding opportunities, academic prowess, aspiration and emerging potential as a World Centre for materials related research.

People in CAMTeC

CAMTeC is part of the portfolio of technologies offered by the AMRC, which includes composites, assembly, powder metallurgy and advanced machining.

Our Mission

  • Construct a centre, which is capable of creating the tools, techniques, means and methodologies to enable the development and exploitation of composites and advanced materials, which fall outside the traditional metals sector.
  • Fulfil the requirements of both National and Regional Government by satisfying the market demand for environmentally friendly materials with extreme performance capability.
  • Provide a flexible and integrated research facility, capable of benchmarking and thereafter ‘showcasing’ the best practice manufacturing methods required to create a world-class competency.
  • Support the relevant research requirements of the industrial Partners.
  • Transfer Technology from Research Centres, leading companies and Universities into UK organisations and in particular companies and SMEs from Yorkshire and the Humber, who wish to enter or diversify into the high added value composites/advanced materials supply chain.
  • Develop and support a strong composites industry within Yorkshire and the Humber.

Our Aims and Objectives

  • Secure strategic alliances with leading OEMs from a cross-section of appropriate industries that drive the value chains within the composites and advanced materials market.
  • Manage development contracts with partner organisations, focusing on market facing, application specific research that can be transferred into industry with maximum impact.
  • Undertake business development activities to ensure the sustainability of the Centre after the completion of projects.
  • Establish links with international centres of excellence for composite materials.
  • Generate development and technology transfer programmes focused on problems faced by the value chain leaders.
  • Coordinate with the NCN the spin out of expertise to regional SMEs relating to education and training, production process optimization, assistance with new product development programmes and design and process simulation services.
  • Create strong links and exploit synergies with composite related activities in West Yorkshire, particularly in the area of woven pre-forms.
  • Develop a unique technology focus - In addition CAMTeC will develop a competence in a specific area, which will give CAMTeC international leadership and a unique position within NCN.
